The winemaker

Château Martet is a winery located in the commune of Eynesse, in the Gironde department of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region. The estate offers five wines, in red or white, suitable for ageing.

The history of Château Martet

Château Martet was built in the 13th century by the Knights Templar. It was originally a hospice for pilgrims on their way to or from Santiago de Compostela. It was enriched by vineyards benefiting from the quality of the soil on the hillsides along the Dordogne, ideal for viticulture and already cultivated in ancient Roman times.

Château Martet was acquired in 1991 by Patrick de Coninck and Albert Michiels. At the time, the vineyard had been somewhat neglected, and the aim of the two partners was to restore it to its former glory.

In 1992, the winery was renovated, modernized and cleaned up. From 1993 to 2006, Château Martet's vineyards were thoroughly restructured. The grape varieties were completely overhauled, by uprooting those less relevant to the region and replanting with more suitable grapes.

In 1998, Patrick de Coninck called in a talented oenologist, Louis Mitjavile, to optimize the quality of the wines. He worked both in the vineyards and in the cellar to produce great Bordeaux wines, including Château Martet's flagship wine: Réserve de Famille.

When Patrick de Coninck died in 2016, his heirs decided to pay tribute to him by creating the cuvée La Fierté de Mon Père.

Since 2021, the collaboration between Château Martet and the Mitjavile family has taken a new turn with the arrival of Nina Mitjavile to support Patrick de Coninck's descendants.

The Château Martet vineyard

The Château Martet vineyard extends over 33 hectares on the hillsides bordering the Dordogne River. The rather rich soil, made up of clay-limestone ferrous gravel, favors the blossoming of scrupulously selected grape varieties. The vines benefit from a temperate, continental climate that helps the grapes reach full maturity.

The red grape varieties are 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. The white grape varieties are Sémillon, Sauvignon, Muscadelle and Ugni Blanc. The average age of the vines is 35 years, and annual production is around 120,000 bottles.

The estate is run in a way that is as respectful as possible of the environment and biodiversity. No pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used. Working the soil allows us to fight parasites and diseases naturally. Natural treatments are applied when absolutely necessary.

Château Martet is in the process of obtaining Level 3 HVE (High Environmental Value) certification.
