The Nuits-Saint-Georges AOC covers 2 communes: Nuits-Saint-Georges and Prémeaux-Prissey, on the way to Beaune. Nuits-saint-Georges gave its name to the Côte de Nuits and is almost exclusively devoted to the production of red wines from the Pinot noir grape (nearly 300 ha). Only 7.3 ha are planted with white wines, of which 4.3 ha are 1er cru. The soil is clayey, very rich in limestone, on a subsoil composed of a stratum of Middle Bathonian Jurassic.
