Wine Banyuls

A natural sweet wine, Banyuls is surprisingly specific. It is a mutated wine, grape brandy is added to the must during fermentation, which blocks the fermentation and concentrates the sugars. Red, rosé or white, you absolutely must try it... Read more on Banyuls

Appellation Banyuls

AOC Banyuls, a nectar difficult to produce

The Banyuls appellation covers 4 communes in the Pyrénées Orientales: Banyuls-sur-Mer, Collioure, Port-Vendres and Cerbère.

Banyuls is a wine that has to be earned...the vines are planted on the côte Vermeille, on sloping hillsides laid out in terraces, yields are low and maturation can last over 30 months.

A distinction is made between the vins de rimage, from a single vintage and which do not undergo the phenomenon of oxidation, the vins traditionnels which have been matured in an oxidative environment and finally the vins de rancio which develop a "rancio taste", specific to slow maturation and exposed to oxygen.

The grape varieties in the appellation are grenache mainly, carignan, macabeu, malvoisie and muscat. The climate of the appellation is Mediterranean and the soils are predominantly schistose.

Tasting the wines of the Banyuls AOC

.

AOC Banyuls Rouge

The red Banyuls de rimage has a ruby robe. The nose is clean with red fruits, with notes of torrefaction. On the palate, this wine is full and very fruity.

The oxidised red Banyuls has a colour that ranges from oiled to mahogany. The nose is powerful but also varies according to the maturation conditions. There are notes of cooked fruit, grape, cherry, fig and prune, dried fruit and roasted or toasted scents with coffee, cocoa, nut or tobacco.

On the palate, the alcohol and sugar are very well balanced. Red Banyuls goes wonderfully with foie gras, cold or hot, and with chocolate or coffee desserts. It can also be drunk as an aperitif.

AOC Banyuls Blanc

Banyuls Blanc offers a golden coat, quite brilliant. The nose diffuses fruity scents of pear, and notes of honey, sometimes citrus and fennel. The palate has a good length, it is a very greedy wine.

White Banyuls goes very well with Roquefort or Saint Nectaire cheese, or even fruit desserts such as pear, peach, apricot or quince.
