The wine of kings

Eastern treasures

In 1703, the Prince of Transylvania gave Louis XIV several bottles of wine.

Gold like the sun and sweet like nectar, Louis XIV declared that this was the king of wines and wine of kings. It became a royal favourite throughout Europe.

Hundreds of years later, this wine is still produced in the oldest classified wine region in the world, Tokaj, Hungary.

From November until the first snowfall, Furmint grapes are harvested by hand. Encrusted by a special rot known as botrytis, the grapes are crushed to obtain a very sweet paste. This paste is added, basket after basket ("puttonyos" in Hungarian), to dry white wine made from the same grapes. The number of puttonyos (3 to 6) determines the sugar content of Tokaj Aszú. It is then stored in oak barrels placed in large passages dug in the rock.
