The winemaker

The history of Domaine Pierre Gaillard

At just 12 years old, Pierre Gaillard was enjoying ploughing vines with a horse. His passion for working the soil and vines persisted, and he began studying viticulture and oenology in Beaune, then continued his studies in Montpellier, where he obtained a national diploma in oenology.

Pierre Gaillard began his career as a vineyard manager in Côte Rôtie, but his desire to create his own wines led him to purchase Clos de Cuminaille, in Malleval, in 1981. In 1987, he settled permanently on the heights of the village.

In 2002, Pierre Gaillard created the Madeloc estate in Banyuls-sur-Mer, then, in 2007, the Cottebrune estate in Faugères. Today, he manages 77 hectares of vines, all estates combined.

The Domaine Pierre Gaillard vineyard

- In Malleval, the Domaine Pierre Gaillard vineyard is located in the northern Rhône valley, stretching from Côte Rôtie in the north to Cornas in the south. The vines cling to steep hillsides on the last foothills of the Massif Central.
The soils are light, permeable and warm. They are composed of decomposing schist in Côte Rôtie, and weathered granite in Saint Joseph, Condrieu and the Côtes du Rhône.
In Malleval, Domaine Pierre Gaillard's grape varieties are Syrah for red wine and Viognier and Roussane for white wine.

- At Cottebrune, the vineyard covers the first rise of the Massif Central on the Béziers plain.
The grape varieties on the brown schist soils are 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre for the red wines; Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Vermentino for the whites.

- At Madeloc, vines occupy soils composed of quartz schists alternating with micaschists, schists and pelites.
The grape varieties are Grenache noir, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Carignan for the red wines, Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Vermentino for the whites.
