"I can't deny myself the pleasure of asking you to invest in a batch of wine. This will give you an example of what the best Bordeaux wine is all about. It comes from the haut-brion vineyard, one of the four recognized as the best, and is from the 1784 vintage. Six dozen bottles of this wine will be packaged separately and sent to you " letter sent by thomas jefferson ? future president of the united states ? To his brother-in-law in 1787 after a visit to the estate. The only 1er grand cru classé outside the Médoc, its history began in the 15th century with the de Pontac family, who bought several parcels before building the northern part of today's château. "haut brion" was the first wine to take the name of its land rather than its owners, and became internationally renowned as early as 1660, when bottles of "hobrion" wine appeared in the cellar book of king charles ii of england. The Talleyrand and Larrieu families followed, before the American Clarence Dillon acquired the château in 1935. A native of France through his grandparents, he was assisted by the Delmas family, who had been running the estate since the 1920s, and from the end of the Second World War, undertook the modernization of the estate, which had been used as a hospital for French soldiers. Always accompanied by a member of the Delmas family, they work together on the estate.
