The history of the Château de Chasselas

The village of Chasselas already existed in Roman times. It was a stopover on the road between Lugdunum, now Lyon, and Lutetia, the present capital, Paris. The village served as a relay. The castle of Chasselas was built in 1325 by the lords of Chasselas. From that time until today, the Château de Chasselas has passed through the hands of about fifteen families. It was abandoned for a long time, before being restored in the 1970s.

In 1971, the Reme couple bought the Château de Chasselas. The wife's maiden name was Cuverville, whose coat of arms appears on the banner of one of the towers. The new owners undertook to restore the castle from top to bottom.

In 1999, the Château de Chasselas was bought by the current owners, Jean-Marc Veyron la Croix and Jacky Martinon. These two wine lovers set about developing the vineyard, which now covers 12 hectares.

The Château de Chasselas estate

The castle itself is well worth a visit. Since 5 July 1979, it has been listed as a historical monument. Its buildings are built around a vast rectangular courtyard. Its towers dominate the region and it is surrounded by vines of course, but also by its remarkable vegetable garden.

It is here that the famous Chasselas grape was born. The Château de Chasselas vineyard extends over Chasselas and Leynes. The 12 hectares of vines are shared between Burgundy and Beaujolais, as Château de Chasselas is located in the very south of Burgundy.

Its wines belong to prestigious appellations such as Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Véran, as well as the Crémant de Bourgogne made with the famous Chardonnay from the Burgundy region. Gamay is used to make Beaujolais Villages red, Mâcon red and rosé, including their famous Rose Eternelle, a sparkling rosé wine.

The vineyard benefits from the most ecological treatment possible, with weeding by scratching the soil, natural grassing and planting of hedges. The Château de Chasselas has been awarded the HVE - High Environmental Value - label, thus validating the approach in favour of biodiversity taken by its two owners.

The wines of Château de Chasselas

The Crémant de Bourgogne Rosé

Château de Chasselas is renowned for its Crémant de Bourgogne Rosé. This sparkling wine, perfect for the aperitif, is made from Pinot Noir, with or without Gamay. Its golden pink colour is the promise of a delicate wine with subtle red fruit aromas.

Pouilly Fuissé Blanc

The Pouilly Fuissé Blanc of the Château de Chasselas is made from the single grape variety Chardonnay. Its colour ranges from pale to deep gold, with green highlights. The nose is full of citrus fruits (lemon and grapefruit), as well as pineapple, white fruits such as peach and lime. The palate is very fruity with some mineral notes of flint.
