The winemaker
At the foot of rolling vineyards of Moulin-à-Vent, right opposite the famous mill of the same name, the domain Diochon Beaujolais was done the old fashioned way since 1935. Bernard Diochon, succeeded his father in 1967. As holder torch to traditional methods passed to him, Bernard explains, "I like tannic wines without heaviness; with fruit and floral aromas. I do not like the weight of wines with harsh tannins. My favorite wines are St Emilion Bordeaux and Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-St-Georges in Burgundy. Each winemaker naturally chooses to make wines in the style they prefer. It works well as Kermit and I share the same taste; it is what enabled our relationship has lasted so long. " Harvest when the grapes are fully mature, traditional fermentation of whole cluster, aging in large old oak barrels and bottling unfiltered spring characterized the style of the house. According to Bernard, one of the most unique qualities of the area is the quality of the soil they cultivate. Granite Crumbly allows the vines to plunge easily into the basement "gore" that feeds the vines, while adding a mineral component pronounced for wine. (James E. Wilson, author of Earth, explains gore for an accumulated mass of sand and clay deposits with thin weathered feldspar, mica and quartz.) Given the age of the vines, all between forty percent year yields are naturally low. These are wines that are easy to enjoy in their youth, but can handle years of aging cellar with great ease. In 2007, Bernard wanted to withdraw but had no heirs. He named as his heir Thomas Paternoster, who proved to be an easy transition. We are grateful that the tradition continues through Diochon Thomas, safeguarding traditional methods that real Beaujolais distinguished from mass production and very over-sold juice flooding the market today.
