Château Carmenère

4
(2 customer reviews)
The Carmenère Castle was born to bring up to date a variety almost forgotten: The Carmenere. The winery was built in 2008 on the foundations of the old barn where cows and horses could rest after a good day's work. The equipment is very complete in order to complete the harvest and winemaking with temperature controlled vats. The work of the cellar is done throughout the year according to the lunar calendar and tastings under the watchful eye of the oenologist. Livestock, only in new French oak barrels just make a roasted touch and tannins, thanks to the variety of carefully selected coopers. Find out more

The history of the estate

The family estate that will give birth to Chateau Carmenère has been in viticulture for five generations and the creation of the vineyard in the 19th century by Louis Richard, who will be succeeded by Roger Richard.

In 1955, the third generation, led by Pierre Barraud, made the choice to fulfill certain specifications, and to join the local cooperative cellar in order to produce wines in AOC Médoc. On this occasion, Pierre Barraud created Château Laubespin. Alain Barraud, his son, took over the family business and expanded the vineyard to 9 hectares.

In 2006, Richard Barraud took the important decision to found a wine estate with a unique winery on the family land. Thus was born the Château Carmenère as it exists today. Founded from one hectare in the Médoc AOC and parcels of land that were initially leased, Château Carmenère gradually expanded before being twinned in 2007 with Château Laubespin and its 18 hectares of vines. Chateau Carmenère also has a cellar, in addition to the singular cellar of Chateau Laubespin.

The terroir

The parcels of the estate are spread over the commune of Queyrac, north of Bordeaux, between the Atlantic and the Garonne estuary. The estate benefits from a typically Medoc terroir, combining sandy-gravelly soils, clay-limestone soils and gravelly-sandy soils.

Conducted in reasoned culture, the vineyard is planted according to the tradition of the Medoc with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Carménère.

Carménère is a grape variety native to this vineyard, which was forgotten in Europe 150 years ago following the phylloxera epidemic and which reappeared following its importation from Chile. Even if it has reappeared in France, Carménère is not very widespread because it is difficult to cultivate and only provides low yields, but Château Carmenère is keen to preserve its heritage.

The wines

The Chateau Carmenère - Petite Réserve is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon and Carménère. The cuvée offers a deep ruby color and a nose mixing notes of fruit, wood and undergrowth. On the palate, there is a nice structure, as well as woody and spicy touches. With ageing (5-8 years), the tannins melt and the matter becomes silky. Perfect for a nice red meat or a roasted guinea fowl.
