Château Carmenère

4
(2 customer reviews)
Château Carmenère was born to bring back to life an almost forgotten grape variety: Carménère. The winery was built in 2008 on the foundations of the old cowshed, where cows and horses could rest after a hard day's work. It is fully equipped for harvesting and vinification, with thermo-regulated vats. The work in the cellar is carried out throughout the year according to the lunar calendar and tastings under the watchful eye of the oenologist. Ageing, exclusively in new French oak barrels, adds a touch of toast and tannin, thanks to the diversity of our rigorously selected coopers. Find out more

The history of the estate

The family estate that will give birth to Château Carmenère has been in viticulture for five generations and the creation of the vineyard in the 19th century by Louis Richard, who was succeeded by Roger Richard.

In 1955, the third generation, led by Pierre Barraud, decided to meet certain specifications and join the local cooperative to produce AOC Médoc wines. On this occasion, Pierre Barraud created Château Laubespin. Alain Barraud, his son, took over the family business and expanded the vineyard to 9 hectares.

In 2006, Richard Barraud took the important step of founding a wine estate with a unique winery on the family estate. Thus was born Château Carmenère as it exists today. Founded from a single hectare in the Médoc AOC and plots initially leased, Château Carmenère gradually expanded before joining forces in 2007 with Château Laubespin and its 18 hectares of vines. Château Carmenère also boasts its own winery, in addition to Château Laubespin's unique cellar.

Terroir

The estate's plots are spread across the commune of Queyrac, north of Bordeaux, between the Atlantic and the Garonne estuary. The estate benefits from a typically Médoc terroir, combining sandy-gravelly, clay-limestone and gravelly-sandy soils.

The vineyard is planted in the Médoc tradition with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Carménère.

Carménère is a grape variety native to this vineyard, which was forgotten in Europe 150 years ago following the phylloxera epidemic and reappeared following its importation from Chile. Although it has reappeared in France, Carménère is not widely planted because it is difficult to cultivate and produces low yields, but Château Carmenère is keen to preserve its heritage.

The wines

The Château Carmenère - Petite Réserve is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon and Carménère. The cuvée offers a deep ruby color and a nose blending notes of fruit, wood and undergrowth. The palate is full-bodied, with hints of wood and spice. With ageing (5-8 years), the tannins mellow and the texture becomes silky. Perfect with red meat or roast guinea fowl.
