The winemaker

The Château de Birot is ideally located for wine production


The property was built in the early 18th century at the center of an agricultural estate. In 1780, it was bought by a former prosecutor at the Bordeaux Court. A lover of fine wines, he saw that the layout of the plots was conducive to vine-growing. He renovated the house, retaining only the buildings used for wine production. In 1989, the Fournier-Castéja family took possession of Château de Birot. The cultivation of fine Bordeaux wines is a family tradition for the Fourniers, and they put all their passion into restoring the estate. In 2014, the company is taken over by a major Chinese hotel group. The Fournier-Castéja couple's sons remain at the helm, and the estate continues to strive for excellence.

The ideal terroir of Château de Birot


Of the property's 40 hectares, 35 are planted with vines. The land enjoys perfect exposure, and the composition of the soil ensures that the vines do not lack water or minerals. Cabernet Sauvignon reaches optimum ripeness thanks to the gravelly soils. As for the Merlot and white varieties, they benefit from the sufficient acidity of the clay and limestone slopes. The vines are cultivated with respect for the ecosystem. Nesting boxes and hedges prevent pest invasions while preserving biodiversity.

The elegant profile of Château de Birot wines


The estate's wines are easy to enjoy young, but gain in complexity as they age. In red, the estate produces AOC Cadillac-Côtes de Bordeaux. They are predominantly Merlot. Their beautiful color and length on the palate work in their favor. The estate's two oldest plots produce an exceptional cuvée aged in barrels for 12 months. The estate also produces an AOC Cadillac sweet white wine.
