The winemaker

The Producer

The history of Chateau de Como goes back to the 19th century. In 1886, its name was mentioned in the Guide Féret, the bible of Bordeaux, as "Cru Bourgeois Supérieur". At that time, the castle was owned by the patrician family of Saint-Estèphe of that name.

In 1997, when the property was bought by Baron Velge, only two hectares remained, the label had disappeared and the vineyard had been leased to another château. Very quickly, the extent of the vineyard increased to seven hectares, combining qualitative and homogeneous terroirs, an elegant label was published and marketing began with good prospects. Already, the first vintages are greeted by the critics.

The commitments

Since 2011, in the logic of searching for the most natural wine possible, Chateau de Como produces a wine without the addition of sulfur. This absence of sulfite makes it possible to find a wine that has a fruit with a roundness and a fatness that is unequalled, especially in youth. This is an avant-garde estate in this area in Saint-Estephe. Since the 2018 vintage, the estate has obtained the organic label. Once again, the château is a forerunner in Saint-Estèphe.

Another leitmotif of the chateau is the trio of observation, flexibility and competence. Considerable time is spent in the field observing the vines and soils so that no decision is made systematically. Whether it is soil nutrition, pruning, protection from pathologies and natural attacks, harvesting... every decision taken is thought through and follows observation.

The choice of the day of the harvest is for example studied at length. Fifteen days before the date of the harvest, grapes are taken from each plot and analyzed in the laboratory. Once the harvest is underway, a first sorting is done at the foot of the vine, then a second one is done on the table in the cellar under the supervision of the manager of the exploitation and the Baron and Baroness Velge.

The terroir

Château de Côme enjoys a beautiful location in the middle of the best parcels of the commune, which gives it the opportunity to offer silky wines with melted and subtle tannins, focused mainly on noble fruits with very good length in the mouth. The result is a wine that could be described as the most Saint-Julien and feminine of Saint-Estèphe.

The blend is 45% Cabernet Sauvignon for structure, tannins and the silky note typical of Como, 45% Merlot for the velvety and fat, and 10% Petit Verdot for the added color and nice spicy note. This combo is ideal for making a Saint-Estèphe.

Great years in this vineyard see fully ripe Cabernets complemented by high quality Merlots. When the year is a bit cloudy, the Cabernet rounds out in contact with the Merlot, which is still ripe. However, the vintage remains present and the wines are declined according to the characteristics of each of them.

The wines

The Chateau de Como is a luscious, silky, complex wine. Composed of Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Merlot (45%) and Petit Verdot (10%), it blends structure and smoothness, all enhanced by a spicy note. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
