The winemaker

The history of Château de Lussan

It all began in 1870, when a winegrower and mason by the name of Pierre Caussan settled in the Médoc. He used his knowledge of the building trade to build the Lussan winery. Initially, the winery was not reserved for the vineyard, but was designed to house the family. The chai was passed on to the next generation with Fernand Caussan, winemaker and cooper. As cellar master at the creation of the Ordonnac cooperative, he was heavily involved in the vineyard. His brother Théophile was also a winegrower, and in 1940 sold the Lussan winery to a family named Breuil. Christian Pierre-Michel Caussan represented the next generation, making his mark as an important part of Château Haut-Coutelin (Saint-Estèphe) and Pontet Chapaz (Margaux). In 1986, he bought back what had once belonged to the family: the Chai de Lussan. It had passed through the hands of the Breuil family and then the Lafortunes. It was at this point that he decided to invest in the winery and acquire new winemaking equipment. A fleet of vats and barrels entered this space, which would become the future of Château Lussan. Thanks to his determination and hard work, he succeeded in establishing himself as a young winemaker. In 2000, he had bought from the Breuil family all the buildings he needed to run his business and make a living from his passion: wine.

The vineyards and wines of Château de Lussan

He took care of 5 hectares of vines, then gradually bought parcels in the Médoc appellation. Judging that the terroir could be profitable for him in the future, he bet on it and planted vines. The soils chosen were predominantly clay-limestone. Very quickly, the estate grew from 5 hectares to 14 hectares, enabling Bruno-Pierre and his wife Aline to increase production to around 50,000 bottles a year. The estate is planted with the Médoc's flagship grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon (54% of the planted area), Merlot (39%) and Malbec (7%). The average age of the vines is 25 years, a good age for making quality wines. The château's cuvées are made in the traditional way, with the harvest carefully sorted. Vinification is precise, and barrel ageing is closely monitored. Bruno-Pierre and Aline take great care to produce wines that convey emotions and tell the story of the estate in the glass. To tell its story, the estate has a new tasting room and reception area, ready to fill you with wonder.
