The History of the Château Frontenac

The Château Frontenac estate dates back to the time of King Louis XIII and his godson Louis de Buade, one of his lieutenant generals, bearing the title Count of Frontenac. The latter also spent time at the court of Louis XIV, before being appointed Governor General of New France.
Viticulture at the château began in earnest in the mid-19th century and has continued ever since, with vinification following the Bordeaux tradition.

The Château Frontenac estate

Château Frontenac is located near Sainte Foy La Grande, 25 kilometres from Saint Émilion. Its vines are located in the commune of Pineuilh, which overlooks the Dordogne valley. They are located on the highest slopes and offer the grapes the best exposure to reach maturity.

The Château Frontenac vineyard covers 30 hectares and its vines have an average age of 30 years. The vines grow on a soil that is mainly composed of clay and limestone. The vines are almost exclusively devoted to reds, with only a little more than one hectare devoted to whites.

The red grape varieties selected are Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives the wine its fruity aromas, and Merlot, which brings suppleness and roundness. The third grape variety, Cabernet Franc, allows the production of wines for ageing which become more refined with age. The blends provide a harmonious balance, with a robust structure that gives way to full-bodied, but never overpowering tannins.
The grape varieties for the white are Sauvignon and Semillon.
