The winemaker

The Château's history is inextricably linked with that of the Dordogne, the mighty river that flows at the foot of the estate and once enabled wine to be transported to Bordeaux by barge. Grandefont meant "great fountain", as it was an important stopover for the boatmen. Today, the estate extends over 45 hectares, and the Merlot grapes, which make up the majority of the vineyard, flourish in gravelly and sandy soils. Situated on an ancient river bed, the soil is rich in small pebbles, which store heat during the day and release it to the grapes at night.
