The family legacy of Chateau Gravas

Château Gravas, as its name suggests, is located in the Graves region not far from the small village of Barsac. The estate was created in 1850 by the Claverie family, then taken over by the Bernard family. In the end, no less than 6 generations have succeeded each other at the head of the estate, reproducing with application the same gestures in the respect of the ancestral know-how. To the point that the estate has even kept an old earthen press. Today, it is Michel who vinifies the 20 ha of the Château after having learned everything from his father.

Unfortunately, the estate has never been classified as a Grand Cru, as are its neighbors Château Climens, Coutet, or Doisy-Daëne. Indeed, the estate was only five years old when the mythical 1855 classification was published. The main criterion of the latter being the selling price of the bottles, the young estate of only 1 ha at the time could obviously not claim to be classified. However, the mineral limestone terroir and the optimal climatic conditions bring together all the elements necessary for the production of great wines.

Wine tourism made-in Château Gravas

Failing to put forward the "Grand Cru Classé" argument, the Château distinguishes itself by offering an exceptional wine tourism experience. The visit of the vineyard and then the buildings mixes art, culture, gardens and wines. The tour is poetic and ends in beauty in the old cellars transformed into an art gallery, where the works of the Alsatian painter and sculptor Paul Flickinger are displayed. Paul Flickinger is also the creator of the labels on the bottles of Château Gravas wine. Art is an important factor in the Bernard family, including in the making of their wines. In their image, warm and charming, it is Florence who leads the visit: she will surely know how to transmit to you the love of the region.

The style of the wines

The Sauternes du Château Gravas is the estate's flagship wine. It is a sweet white wine as they are so well made in the region. Indeed, the weather conditions and the location of the terroir lend themselves perfectly to the development of botrytis cinerea. When the cold waters of the Ciron river flow into the Garonne, a humid fog invades the vineyard and allows the fungus to reach the grape berries. It is this fungus that makes it possible to produce the great sweet white wines of the appellation. Another cuvée offers a lighter sweet wine with a little Muscadelle.

However, the Château also produces dry wines in AOC Graves declined in white (based on Semillon) and red (80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot). So, if you are not fond of sweet wines, you can enjoy these dry wines, or rediscover Sauternes in a cocktail recipe well in vogue ...
