Château Luchey-Halde

An atypical and preserved history

Before its acquisition by the École Nationale Supérieure d'Ingénieurs Agronomes, Château Luchey-Halde passed through the hands of various owners who exploited the vines present on the territory since Roman times to make it one of the most renowned terroirs of Mérignac until the beginning of the 20th century. In 1920, the entire estate was torn down, as were many surrounding properties.

However, the land of Luchey-Halde was preserved from the urbanization phenomenon of the time thanks to the army which made it one of its training grounds. In 1999, Bordeaux Agro Sup bought the land when the Ministry of the Army put it up for sale and saw the opportunity to revive the wine industry and make it a showcase for the know-how of the establishment that trains the future winegrowers of our country.

An exceptional and respected terroir

Located in the heart of the Bordeaux metropolis, in the very heart of the prestigious Pessac-Léognan appellation, Château Luchey-Halde benefits, as revealed by the pedological study carried out by the teacher-researchers of Bordeaux Sup Agro, from a privileged terroir conducive to the cultivation of vines and the vinification of great wines. The gravelly soil is indeed quite suitable as it is poor and draining, forcing the vine to draw its nutrients from the deepest part of the soil, which makes it stronger due to the higher quality of the absorbed nutrients.

Of course, the Bordeaux climate is no longer presented, more than appropriate for the blossoming of the vine thanks to the river and sea influences it benefits from and which temper the strong heat that is typical of the summers of the Atlantic coast.

Thus, the emblematic grape varieties of the region such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet France, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon develop at their best. The typicality of the Chateau Luchey-Halde estate lies in its high density of planting, which allows the concentration of the bunches of each vine to obtain a greater intensity of flavors.

Wines from innovation, the result of the responsible commitment of its teams

The reconstruction of the estate has allowed the École Nationale Supérieure d'Ingénieurs Agronomes to experiment with new winemaking techniques. For example, the winery is made up of a circular, semi-buried vat room allowing for gravimetric reception of the berries.

Sustainable development and agro-ecology are also at the center of reflection in the conduct of the estate, as well as the issue of transmission of knowledge which is omnipresent.

It is from these principles that the three cuvées of the château are born, all three vinified in red and white: Luchey-Halde, Les Haldes de L. and U. Each of these wines is a reflection of their terroir and the care that is taken in their vinification.
