The winemaker

The history of Château Mangot

The history of the Mangot estate dates back to 1510, when Guilhem Dubreuil, from a bourgeois and merchant family originally from Castillon, married Madeleine Château. Two of their children, Pierre and Jean, inherited the property and retained the appellation "Sieurs de Mangot". A notarized deed dated March 6, 1559, attests that the vineyard already existed. A succession of owners has continued the winegrowing vocation of Château Mangot. In 1902, Pierre Parraud, then at the head of the vineyard, distinguished himself by winning numerous awards for his wines over the years, gleaned from various events in Bordeaux, Paris, Lyon, Brussels and Ghent. Between 1937 and 1944, the estates of Pierre Parraud and Marie Louise Desage named Jeanne-Simone Parraud, wife of André Bourricaud, as sole heir. In 1954, the estate was enlarged with the acquisition of Château de Lisse, which adjoined Château Mangot. In 2000, after the vineyards had been extensively restructured in previous years, it was the turn of the buildings to be renovated. Today, Château Mangot belongs to the Petit and Todeschini families.

The Château Mangot vineyard

Château Mangot occupies 37 hectares in a single block, of which 34 hectares are reserved for the vineyard. The parcels lie to the east of the Saint Émilion appellation, in the commune of Saint Etienne de Lisse. The Château Mangot vineyard comprises 21 plots, located at altitudes ranging from 35 to 86 meters, the highest point in the appellation. The combe du Mangot (also known as the "cirque") faces due south, with 4 distinct terroirs: pied de côtes, coteaux, terrasses and plateaux. The subsoil of Château Mangot's vineyards is composed of asteriated limestone. It rests on a bed of calcareous molasse, i.e. soft rock. This outcrops on slopes with a gradient of 15% and surrounds the limestone plateaus. The over-representation of limestone in Château Mangot's terroirs gives its wines a very special density. It provides a real aromatic richness and offers specific characteristics to the wine, with great freshness and subtle minerality. 15% of the land surface consists of ecological reserves. The woods, embankments, hedges and grassy strips allow flora and fauna to thrive and preserve biodiversity. Château Mangot's vineyards are managed with the utmost respect for the environment, earning them the HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) level 3 label, as well as ISO 14001 certification from SME Bordeaux.
