    In a few words ...

Before being split up, Château mouton rothschild and Château d?armailhacq were originally one and the same estate, named mouton. In the words of Baron Philippe de Rothschild on the 1933 label, "these two vineyards constitute a unique ensemble, a masterpiece of French vineyards". As early as 1680, the Pauillac municipal register records the existence of the Armailhacq brothers, owners of the plots of land that would later become Château Mouton d?Armailhacq. The vineyard remained in the family until it was sold in 1844 to the Carruades du Pouyalet family. The estate?s modern history began after the 1st World War, when Count Adrien de Ferrand, owner since 1878, created the SA du Domaine de Mouton d?Armailhacq. In 1933, following his death, the vineyard became the property of the young baron philippe de rothschild. He changed the name of the wine to "mouton baron philippe" in 1956. The new label read "mouton baron philippe is produced from the best vines of the former mouton d?armailhacq". The château changed its name once again, becoming "mouton baronne philippe" until 1988, when the baroness decided to return it to its original identity, i.e. "château d?armailhac". Situated to the north of the commune of Pauillac, this 5th Cru Classé benefits from an exceptional terroir: three plateaus of light gravel (the Cabernet?s preferred terroir), resting on a clay-limestone subsoil that gives the wines all their finesse. Finally, the three-metre-deep gravel allows the traditional Médoc grape varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot to flourish.Robert Parker has regularly emphasized the quality of this cru in recent decades, notably with a 93/100 rating for the 2010 vintage: "another sensational work by Philippe Dhaluin, the administrator of Mouton Rothschild, who offers here a wine with floral notes intermingled with seasonning.
