The winemaker

The history of Domaine de la Folie

Domaine de la Folie has belonged to the Noël-Bouton family for three centuries. It owes a debt of gratitude to one of its earliest owners, Étienne-Jules Marey, for developing the farm and estate at a time when he was already busy with his various activities. Marey was a doctor, a professor at the Collège de France and an inventor. He was responsible for the chronophotograph, the forerunner of the camera that enabled the Lumière brothers to invent cinema. He also helped improve the sphygmograph - a mechanical measuring instrument used in the mid-19ᵉ century to record the pulse - by making it portable.

Over the generations, Domaine de la Folie developed its land, between Bouzeron and Rully, in the north of the Côte Chalonnaise to reach a vineyard of almost 14 hectares.

Since 2010, Domaine de la Folie has been managed by Clémence and Baptiste Dubrulle, who ensure the continuity of the family know-how by taking over from Élisabeth and Jérôme Noël-Bouton.

The Domaine de la Folie vineyard

The Domaine de la Folie vineyard covers almost 14 hectares, divided equally between the area dedicated to red wine and that destined for white wine production. The majority of the vines belong to the appellation Rully, one of the most prestigious in the Chalonnais region. As an added bonus, the estate enjoys an exceptional geographical location, overlooking the Côte de Beaune and offering a panorama that alone is worth the detour.

The white grape variety is entirely Chardonnay; the red grape variety is Pinot Noir. The average age of the vines is 35 years. Annual production is 50,000 bottles.

Since the early 2000s, Domaine de la Folie has been managed using culture raisonnée. The soil is worked using traditional methods, avoiding the use of weedkillers. The environment and biodiversity are preserved by using as few chemicals as possible. The winegrowers have chosen to control yields, in order to prioritize quality.

Harvesting is manual and carried out in small crates to ensure the integrity of the fruit, which arrives intact at the winery.

The Rully appellation

White wines from the Rully appellation boast a beautiful golden color with green highlights. They have a floral bouquet of acacia, honeysuckle and hawthorn, as well as fruity notes dominated by lemon and white peach. The white wine is enhanced by mineral notes of flint.

Red wines from the Rully appellation range in color from cherry ruby to dark garnet. The nose is marked by red and black fruits, licorice and rose petals.
