The winemaker

h2 style="font-size: 1.2em;">The History of Domaine du Prieuré
The Domaine du Prieuré is the family property of the Meurice family. Its history begins at the beginning of the 20th century, with Auguste. He was then working for other winegrowers, in Vougeot, 20 kilometers from Savigny lès Beaune. In addition to his work days - to which he added the return trips by bicycle - he began to plant some vines in Savigny lès Beaune and to exploit them for himself.

Born in 1921, his son Henri then developed the vineyard to reach 4 hectares. As they were not enough to support his family, he pursued a double activity as a broker.

It was not until 1966 that Henri was able to buy the Priory, a Cistercian building from the end of the 18th century. The Domaine du Prieuré was born. Jean-Michel, Henri's son, joined his father in 1974 to manage the estate. He buys new parcels, notably in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune.

The exploitation covers then 12,5 hectares. The Priory was no longer sufficient to process the grapes, so a new winery was built in 1992, at the entrance to the village of Savigny lès Beaune. This was an opportunity to rejuvenate and modernize the production unit. In the early 2000s, it was Stephen's turn to take over the family business.

The Domaine du Prieuré vineyard

The Domaine du Prieuré operation remains family-owned and as close to nature as possible. The know-how is transmitted from generation to generation. It is important to look after the vines every season of the year, without delegating tasks.

The Meurice family is keen to preserve the terroir by using as little herbicides or other chemicals as possible. They believe that it is essential that the microbial life of the soil be intense and that the cycle of nature take its course. That is why all the vineyards are plowed.

The choice is to plant with a density of 11 000 vines per hectare. This competition between the vines contributes to the low yields. The vines are forced to extend their roots as deep as possible, in order to get the nutrients, as well as the water they need to give the best grapes.

Most of the work is done manually, especially the green work of disbudding and trellising. This allows us to ensure the proper distribution of the grapes so that they benefit from the best exposure. The harvest is manual. They start at the right maturity and each parcel is treated separately.
