Champagne Morel
Champagne Morel Père & Fils, you can feel the family imprint here! The epic began almost 75 years ago with only a few vines. Initially, the domain only produced still wines, and in 1987, it started the sparkling wine experience. Today, the trio of Simon in the vineyard, Paul in the winemaking, and Emilie in the elaboration of the champagnes, are working to perpetuate the tradition and ensure the continuity of the Morel style for 5 generations. The winemaker
A terroir in the heart of the Côte des Bars
In the heart of the Côte des Bars stretch the rows of vines of the family estate. The almost 80,000 vines of the estate are spread over different Crus: Dagonet, Crieux, Valfly, Nogent... Here, the real master of the region is the Pinot Noir. It makes up 90% of the estate's vineyard, the remaining 10% being Chardonnay. The champagnes come entirely from the family vineyard : unlike the big houses, there is no buying of grapes here. The family is making every effort to respect the environment in the vineyard, which makes this fact all the more important. The entire vineyard is indeed conducted in HVE (High Environmental Value). This committed approach, initiated in the 2000s, is now at the heart of daily practices : natural grassing of the vines, no use of herbicides or insecticides, manual harvesting...
Les Riceys
Beyond this committed approach and family heritage, Champagne Morel has the distinction of being one of the 25 winegrowers to produce Rosé des Riceys. Les Riceys is a small, picturesque commune with only 1,200 inhabitants, but above all with 866 hectares of vineyards : it is the commune with the largest wine-growing area in the entire region! Moreover, it is also the only one authorized to produce the 3 Champagne appellations (Champagne, Coteaux Champenois and Rosé des Riceys). Although it doesn't have the reputation of its colleagues from Aÿ, Ambonnay or Oger, the wines and champagnes produced here are no less qualitative... It's not by chance that the village was awarded its own AOC in 1947 !
The Morel style
The Morel family, due to its geographical location in the heart of the Pinot Noir kingdom, has made rosé its expertise. Champagne is the only region where rosé can be made by blending white wine with red wine. At Champagne Morel, we prefer another method of vinification, which would better reveal the aromas of the grapes : maceration. This choice accompanies a more global approach to improvement undertaken by the family : respect for Nature in the vineyard, installation of a new state-of-the-art winery in 2005, meticulous care taken with the blends - even choosing not to produce certain vintages on certain vintages...
In short, the Morel style favors quality, but never at the expense of accessibility and sharing ! In fact, what would you say about tasting their Rosé des Riceys around a good poularde à la crème with your family? You can even go to the domain to admire their wine library, where the oldest bottle dates back to the creation of the domain in 1947 !
