The winemaker
The history of the estate
Founded on La Livinière ("place planted with vines"), in the heart of the Minervois between Toulouse and Montpellier, Château Maris is today established on 45 hectares spread over a multitude of parcels on the hill above La Livinière.
It was Robert Eden, a passionate winegrower, who settled on these lands in 1997 after traveling to the heart of the world's most beautiful wine regions. From the outset, he was committed to organic and biodynamic viticulture. The château's co-owner, Kevin Parker, is the guarantor of the estate's sustainable philosophy.
In 1999, Château Maris became the first cru recognized in the Languedoc region (Minervois).
Terroir
The château's terroir is characterized by a rather gentle, south-facing slope, thus benefiting from good sun exposure. The soils are composed of schist, sandstone, quartz, marble and limestone that have been present for over 50 million years.
Château Maris is the first vineyard in Europe to be certified BCorp. It also received Ecocert certification in 2002, Biodyvin certification in 2004 and Demeter certification in 2008.
The wines
Cuvée La Touge is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan. The color is a dark red tending toward inky purple. On the nose, there are notes of black fruit. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with well-integrated acidity and ripe, juicy tannins. Ideal with red meat, such as beef tenderloin or ribs.
Cuvée Brama is a 100% Grenache Gris. To the eye, it has a beautiful golden yellow color with slightly green highlights. The nose gives off aromas of fresh, concentrated fruit, honeysuckle, lemon zest and buttered almonds. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, with an elegant texture enhanced by acidity. A perfect match for smoked salmon or a cheese platter.
Cuvée Las Combes is vinified from Grenache grapes. Dark purple in color, the nose offers a bouquet of ripe, tart fruit (pomegranate, cherry, blackcurrant), roasted coffee beans, black olive and garrigue. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, but balanced by a lovely freshness and salivating roundness. Its character is juicy and taut, with a finish marked by generous fruit. Las Combes goes perfectly with a lamb tagine.
The Vermentino cuvée is made exclusively from this Italian grape variety. From coastal limestone and clay terroirs, this wine blends floral notes (hawthorn and lime blossom). Elegant and round, this wine is also refreshing on the palate. It's a wine to enjoy on a summer's evening, with mixed salads, grilled meats, poultry or white meats.
Cuvée Maris "Le Zulu" is a blend of Grenache and Syrah. The color is a deep garnet red. Lively and fruity, juicy and a touch salty, it's typical of southern France, combining fruitiness and moderate acidity provided by the terroir. Supple and generous, the palate confirms the fruity impression given by the nose. A wine for friends, you'll enjoy it at the table with a wide range of dishes, including pizzas and pasta bolognese.
