The History of Frégate Estate

Before being a warship, the word frégate - or fragato in old Provencal - means to smash stones, in order to prepare the land for cultivation. The origin of the name of the Domaine de Frégate comes from this verb, but, if we are to believe the legend, it would seem that a boat stranded on the shore of the farm is not foreign either. This would explain the frigate design on the Domaine de Frégate bottle labels.

The stones are an integral part of the Domaine de Frégate: they make up the limestone soil, participate in the establishment of the restanques (these low dry stone walls that support the terraced crops) and were used to build the winery.

The Domaine de Frégate vineyard

The Domaine de Frégate vineyard enjoys an extraordinary geographical location. Its vines overlook the Mediterranean Sea, which brings the humidity of the sea air, as well as exceptional sunshine, 300 days a year. The hydration is completed by some essential rains. The mistral wind that beats the vines sanitizes them and prevents many diseases.

The stony soil is clay-limestone and very arid. It is however rich in silica.

The vineyard covers 26 hectares. The vines are located astride the communes of Saint Cyr sur Mer and Bandol, framing the calanque of Port d'Alon.

The Domaine de Frégate vineyard is mainly composed of Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Grenache. Mourvèdre, of Spanish origin, is considered the king grape of Bandol. It makes up 75% of the wines of Domaine de Frégate. The Cinsault is from Provence. It brings a nice color to the rosé, its fruity taste, as well as its freshness. Grenache gives strength to the wine, as well as a strong coloration.

The white grapes are Clairette, Ugni blanc, Sauvignon and Rolle (or Vermentino).

The wines of Domaine de Frégate

The red wine of Domaine de Frégate

For Domaine de Frégate, red wine represents about 60,000 bottles per year, or 40% of the production. It is composed of 75% Mourvèdre.

The red wine has a dark color, with garnet red reflections. Its nose is wild, with flavors of black fruits, raised by aromas of licorice and spices. Its mouth is suave and dense, always velvety. The tannins participate strongly in the structure.

The rosé wine of Domaine de Frégate

The rosé wine represents 50% of the production of Domaine de Frégate. It is made from a blend of the three Bandol grape varieties: Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Grenache.

It is a wine of character, structured and balanced. Its aromatic palette is dense and fruity, dominated by small red fruits and completed by citrus notes. It is always fresh in the mouth.

The white wine of Domaine de Frégate

The remaining 10% is represented by the white wine made up mainly of Clairette, complemented by Ugni blanc, Sauvignon and Rolle. This very fine wine gives off aromas of white flowers and exotic fruits.
