The History of Chateau Thuerry

Château Thuerry is a majestic bastide whose origins date back to the 12th century, to the time of the Templars. It is located at the entrance to the Haut Var Verdon Regional Nature Park, in Provence.

The estate is now managed by Jean-Louis Croquet.

The vineyard of Château Thuerry

The estate of Château Thuerry covers a total of 340 hectares, of which 40 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of vines. 750 olive trees complete the plantations. The vineyard plots are located in the communes of Villecroze, Flayosc and Tourtour.

Château Thuerry produces 45% red wines, 45% rosé wines and 10% white wines.

The vines benefit from an exceptional microclimate, as they are protected from the winds, as well as destructive storms. The soil is mostly composed of clay and limestone. The highest plots of land reach an altitude of 400 meters. They cling to the hillside, on stony soils, benefiting from a full southern exposure.

The oldest vines at Château Thuerry were planted in 1927. These Cinsault vines still produce highly regarded heady rosés today. The rest of the vineyard has been made up of local varieties for decades, with Syrah, Rolle and Grenache. Since the mid-1990s, it has been enriched with Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, and more recently Merlot, due to its beautiful complicity with Cabernet Sauvignon.

Each year, the composition of the vineyard is challenged and a few feet of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvèdre are renewed.

The wines of Chateau Thuerry

AOC Côtes de Provence

The Côtes de Provence appellation covers 20,000 hectares in 84 communes in the departments of Var, Bouches du Rhône and Alpes Maritimes. This great terroir gives rise to dark and fruity red wines, clear and expressive rosé wines and white wines with floral flavors and a sparkling color.

AOC Côteaux Varois en Provence

The Coteaux Varois en Provence appellation covers just over 2,700 hectares. The AOC lists 28 communes in the Var department, between the Sainte Baume massif and the Verdon gorges.

The highest plots of land extend between 350 and 500 meters above sea level, giving a continental character to the wines. The cool nights follow the hot days of summer. The winter can be harsh and much more marked than in the rest of the region. These particularities give the wine an incomparable freshness and a richness in fresh fruits for the white and the rosé. The red wines are silky and imbued with the flavors of the garrigue.

IGP Var Côteaux du Verdon

The appellation Pays des Coteaux du Verdon takes its name from the Verdon River, which runs through the Alpes de Haute Provence, the Bouches du Rhône and the Var.

The warm climate allows the production of harmonious, fresh and fruity wines.
