Domaine de la Madrague

4.5
(2 customer reviews)
Domaine de la Madrague has a long-standing reputation in the world of organic wines, and is a unique and welcoming winegrowing estate, completely renovated after being neglected for several years. It covers the communes of Gassin and La Croix Valmer, on the Saint Tropez peninsula. Bought by Jean Marie Zodo in 2007, the estate had fallen into disuse, but its potential was just waiting to be revived. Major work was undertaken, and the estate was immediately relaunched as an organic estate. Find out more

The winemaker

A committed viticulture

Cultivation techniques and work in the winery are carried out in strict compliance with the requirements of the organic label, controlled by Ecocert. The only treatments used are natural, with the teams using only copper and sulfur, authorized by the label. The rows are grassed to limit erosion.

The use of these methods allows for a rich microbial life and promotes a natural balance in the ecosystems, which not only ensures the production of high-quality grapes and wines, but also preserves the terroirs in the long term.

In addition, La Madrague committed to a strong reduction in the sulfites present in its wines long before the new regulations requiring their reduction. As a result, it offers cuvées with almost half the sulfite content than the limits imposed by organic wine certifications.

Work in the cellar

La Madrague works with a personalized approach to each cuvée, using sometimes atypical methods.

In the facilities, a tuns and barrels room has been installed behind the tasting cellar. It's in this uncluttered space that the cuvées are housed, each benefiting from its own specific ageing and vinification conditions.

Thus the Charlotte cuvées are aged for 12 months in foudre, while the Claire cuvées remain for 12 months in demi-muids from several cooperages, allowing each to be subtly blended.

Cuvées César and Charles are made from grapes grown according to the most traditional methods and with care respecting the principles of Biodynamics and taking into account the influence of the moon.

Cuvée César red wines are then vinified in two stages, first in wooden vats, then for 12 months in terracotta amphorae.

The Charles cuvées are vinified in a sandstone egg.

The critically acclaimed wines

La Madrague wines have become safe values in the region's wine world. Its cuvées have won prestigious awards: a silver medal at the Concours Général de Paris and a gold medal at the Concours de Mâcon for Cuvée Claire rosée, a gold medal at the Concours de Paris for Cuvée Claire white, and two gold medals in Brussels and Paris for Charlotte rosé.
