The winemaker

The rebirth of a vineyard

The history of the Toasc estate began in 1992, when 12 hectares of land left uncultivated on the place called "Toasc" (on the heights of Nice) were bought by Bernard Nicoletti. Part of this land had already been used for viticulture more than a century ago, from 1805 to 1906, by the Hooper family. Bernard Nicoletti decided to keep the olive trees planted on 1.5 hectares of land and to clear and restructure the rest in order to bring back to life an estate that had been abandoned.

Thereafter, he planted on these lands grape varieties endemic to the Nice region, and which are particularly typical of the Bellet appellation: the Folle Noire and the Braquet (red wine), as well as the Rolle (white wine). The first vintages will be marketed from the year 2000. Bernard's grandfather, Joseph, owned a transport company in Nice and thus ensured the transport of wine in the Var, getting paid in grapes.

Still in 2000, in a logic of development of the domain, Bernard Nicoletti built his own cellar and a new residence in the Palladian style. Today, the estate has 15 hectares of land, including 8 hectares of vines and 2 hectares of olive trees.

The terroir

The wines of the Toasc estate are produced in the area of the Bellet AOC and the commune of Saint-Blaise, yielding wines in the Bellet appellation and the Saint-Blaise vin de pays.

The terroir of the AOC Bellet, in the middle of the Mediterranean region. It enjoys a beautiful sunshine and beneficial rains, which ensure the formation of a particular microclimate (sunshine, good irrigation and aeration thanks to the Mistral and the Tramontane). As far as soils are concerned, we find mostly terraces of rolled pebbles from the Pliocene, exposed east/south-east. This soil composition allows a gentle development of the vine and an optimal maturation of the grapes.

The terroir, due to its proximity to Bellet, is quite identical and the climate is much the same. The soils are also composed of pudding, a mixture of pebbles, sand and clay, in the same way as those of the Bellet AOC.

The wines

The red Toasc stands out with a very light red color. On the nose, there are quite smoky aromas, as well as a sweet smell of cherry. The mouth, surprisingly, offers a rather dense matter as well as aromas of fresh fruit and licorice. Perfect with grilled mullet or an avocado/salmon salad.

The Toasc rosé gives off a salmon pink color, quite pale and bright at the same time. The nose, slightly iodized, reveals spicy and ripe notes, very expressive. The mouth, lively and elegant, develops a beautiful structure and a balance allowing it to be married with many dishes. The finish is spicy. Mediterranean and Asian cuisines will be sublimated by this wine.

The white Toasc offers a golden color, as pale as it is bright. On the nose, aromas of white flowers, citrus and lemon come through, before giving way to a fresh and opulent mouthfeel, finishing on a lemony and gourmet note. It will go very well with a seafood platter or a cheese platter.
