The winemaker

History

The Costamagna family has owned the estate for several generations. In 1927, Joseph Costamagna fell under the spell of a piece of land that was then being farmed. He bought it and cultivated the vineyard to sell his grapes. The particularity of the estate was that it supplied the local terracotta factory. Indeed, it constituted a reserve of clay for the region!

It was not until the next generation that the Escaravatiers estate produced its own wine. It started making wine and bottled its first wines in the 1970s. It was this decision that marked the beginning of the adventure as a wine-making estate.

In 1981, the first Côtes de Provence were created by Jean-Pierre Costamagna. Following this, the search for quality became more and more apparent. He sought to improve the winemaking process by actions such as barrel aging. The Domaine des Escaravatiers is proud to present a new and more qualitative range named "Château" from the 1989 vintage.

This desire to move to the next level was realized in 2005 with major projects for the winery. New facilities for vinification, as well as a new sales cellar to showcase the wines of Domaine des Escaravatiers, are built.

But by the way, where does the name "Escaravatiers" come from? It comes from the word "Escaravaï" which means "beetle" in Provencal. A sacred insect among the Egyptians who were also one of the first wine-growing peoples in the world...

An environmentally conscious family

The Domaine des Escaravatiers is best known for its rosé wines. Of its entire production, 70% is vinified in this color then only 15% of white and 15% of red. On the 30 hectares located in the Var at Puget sur Argens, there are no less than 13 varieties that are planted, thus releasing the creativity of the Costamagna family.

A creative spirit that expresses itself during the vinifications. It is in the cellar that the magic happens: thermo-regulated stainless steel vats for temperature control and new French oak barrels for the aging of the wines... In short, the Domaine des Escaravatiers has been able to invest to improve its production tool and thus make great wines.

In the vineyard, the family is concerned about the environment. In particular, they follow the principles of integrated viticulture, being attentive to the needs of their vines. Fewer treatments on the vines and natural fertilizer inputs are organized in order to live at the rhythm of the vine and respond to the slightest difficulty they may encounter during the wine year.

It is thanks to these commitments and the work of the Costamagna family that the Domaine des Escaravatiers is now recognized for its exceptional qualities. The attachment to a well done work simply results in vintages that are worth the detour...
