The winemaker

The history of Château de Gourdon

Château de Gourdon is located near Bollène, in the heart of the Southern Rhône wine region, an area already cultivated by the Romans who understood the value of the land. In those days, they produced a wine famous as far away as Rome, Falerne.

The vineyards surrounding Château de Gourdon cover some 50 hectares of gentle slopes, belonging to the appellations Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Village Suze la Rousse. Not far from here is the border with the famous and prestigious Châteauneuf du Pape appellation region, named after Pope Clement V, who took up residence in Avignon in the 14th century.

The region's winegrowing tradition has never wavered since the Romans left. The name Château de Gourdon was first coined in the 1870s, and successive growers have kept this excellent terroir alive.

The Château de Gourdon vineyard

The Château de Gourdon vineyard extends around the château. The vines benefit from a southern exposure of the slopes, granting generous sunshine to the grapes.

The mistral wind often blows through the region. It beats down on the vines, keeping parasites at bay and preventing disease, without the need for chemical inputs. No herbicides are used on the farm either. The plots are also exposed to a gentle breeze from the north, after following the Rhône river. This lowers the temperature after the scorching heat of summer. It also facilitates the addition of natural acids to the grapes, further hardening them against disease.

As the Mediterranean climate is influential in this region, the grapes ripen in the best possible conditions.

The soil of the Château de Gourdon vineyard is predominantly sandy, which contributes to the production of complex wines with powerful aromas and assertive character. Nutrient-poor, this terroir gives the wines a condensed, intense fruitiness. The other soil components, limestone and silicate, add a touch of minerality by forcing the vine roots to go deep into the soil to find the nutrients and minerals they need.

Château de Gourdon's grape varieties include Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Grenache Noir, Syrah, Carignan, Clairette, Roussanne, Marsanne, Cinsault and Mourvèdre.

The harvest of each plot is decided when the grapes are judged to be at optimum ripeness, which is why it takes place over several weeks.
