A Castle: Several Stories Our area has many stories to tell since the 13th century. It is situated on the Royal Road of Lirac between Uzes and Avignon. It was the property of the Marquis de Martine. It was mostly surrounded by woods, where the Marquis loved to hunt. At that time, the Castle, mentioned in the archives, was probably located in the same place as today's building. An exceptional fact to note: the Marquis allowed people from the village to hunt freely in its field. Finally, the Marquis left his estate to go and fight in the Crusades in Israel and never returned. As he had no heirs, the village of St Laurent des Arbres inherited the Devoy Martine. In the early 16th century, Charles Caubriac bought the estate. Under Louis XV, in the 18th century, one of his heirs cut the wood goshawks the castle to plant vines. We assume that the 13th century castle was dismantled by the inhabitants of the village and rebuilt in the 18th to become a hunting lodge and later a stronghold to house the soldiers. This building is still visible today. Arriving on the Joseph and Marc field discovered in the building, a plate on which was represented the shape of the shield over as the vineyard logo. They added waves symbolizing their journey around the Mediterranean and the moon is Venus, goddess of the sea and love. Just in the vineyards, facing the Castle, there is a well, probably from the time of the Marquis of Martine. It always aroused the curiosity of Fabrice and Véronique, children of Mark. One day they threw a stone inside. To their surprise, they heard the stone rolled like she was rolling on stair treads and then they heard him hit a piece of wood, as if up against a door ... Their children imagination has transformed the wells secret passage that served the Marquis to escape his attackers. Many records have been lost since the 13th century. Who knows what they would have taught us about the castle and the well?
