Château Unang

Unang is a self-contained, isolated estate with, oddly enough, its own geological category: the Unang sands. At Unang, all grapes are hand-picked, and the vineyard is now certified organic, the white since 2012 and the red and rosé since 2013. What the owners love about the wine is the elegance and depth, and its site allows it to make these wines par excellence. These are high altitude wines of freshness, vigor, and minerality. The winemaker

The history of the estate

Since the ninth century, the Unang castle was passed from one bishopric to another, until it was sold in the late seventeenth century. In the late 18th century, the estate was renovated and formal gardens were designed.

The current owners of the château, James and Joanna King, acquired it in 2001. At that time, 20 hectares of vines were planted but part of the vineyard (6 hectares to be precise) was poorly located or diseased and so was pulled out. A new winery was built and replanting of the vines began in 2003, eventually reaching a cultivable area of 15 hectares.

In the distribution of the grape varieties, we find the reds (Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Roussanne) which are planted towards the middle and the heights of the slopes, as well as the whites (Roussane, Grenache blanc and Clairette) which are rather located below the hill in the cooler areas.

The terroir

The vineyard of Chateau Unang covers 15 hectares of vines, in the heart of 80 hectares of forest at a moderate altitude between 220 and 350 m, it is located on the hill of Unang. In the middle of the southern Rhone Valley, the estate is located in the Ventoux AOC. Facing due south, the property nevertheless benefits from a cooler climate than the other terroirs of the sub-region.

The soils of the vineyard are quite atypical: they are the Unang sands, a particular type of sandy soil that covers the limestone. These soils can also be found in the AOC Gigondas.

Conducted in Organic Agriculture since 2012 for the whites and 2013 for the reds and rosés, the estate is concerned with producing authentic wines that respect the terroir. Thus, all the grapes are picked by hand and the vines as well as the soil are treated ecologically.

The wines

The Chateau Unang la Croix vintage gives off a nose with notes of chocolate and fig. On the palate, the material is dense, and we find cherry aromas as well as a touch of camphor that brings a little freshness on the finish. The whole is raised by peppery notes. An elegant and long wine, it can be enjoyed with marinated duckling or mixed barbecue beef skewers.

The La Source vintage offers a deep ruby red color. Its nose is marked by intense aromas of black currant, peppers and balsamic, all with a surprising greediness and minerality. In the mouth, the tannins are round and the matter is as much mineral as elegant.
