The history of Château Vessière

Mas de Vessière was founded by Lucie de Vessière, who later became wife Teulon. The prestigious residence was renovated in keeping with local architecture. The walls were rendered in lime, while white stone was used to cover the floor. They come from the Ménerbes quarry in the Luberon, just across the Alpilles mountains.

Château Vessière was passed on to Philippe Teulon in 1975, and the first vintage was marketed in 1979. Philippe's son, Vincent, temporarily moved to California's Napa Valley to study other ways of growing vines, before taking over Château Vessière.

Since 2007, Vincent and his wife Lucie have continued to develop the estate, while they have made the conversion to organic.

The Château Vessière vineyard

Château Vessière sits in the heart of the Costières de Nîmes, at the southernmost tip of the Rhône Valley. Its vineyards - covering 65 hectares at the gateway to the Camargue - represent the most southerly of Rhone terroirs.

The vines benefit from an exceptional terroir and climate. The soil consists of vast terraces of rolled pebbles deposited by the Rhône and Durance rivers. Mixed with stony alluvium composed of red clay, the pebbles promote convection: during the day, they store up the sun's heat, which they release at night. The vines enjoy very sunny, dry summers, punctuated by irregular rainfall. AOC Costières wines are marked by the influence of the Mediterranean climate.

Since 2019, the estate has gone biodynamic and holds the Demeter label. Medicinal plants have been planted throughout the estate to strengthen the vines' natural defenses against disease. Gradually, these plants are making it possible to reduce (and eventually totally eliminate) the use of chemicals, copper and sulfur.

The wines of Château Vessière

Château Vessière produces two cuvées in the three dresses (Mas de Vessière and Château Vessière), as well as a red and white cuvée - Philippe de Vessière - and a red wine, Ortus.

Le Mas de Vessière - rouge

Mas de Vessière red is a blend of 70% Carménère and 30% Grenache Noir.

The wine offers a magnificent aromatic palette, concentrated in very ripe red and black fruits that bring roundness and suavity.

Le Mas de Vessière - blanc

Mas de Vessière white is composed of 70% Grenache blanc and 30% Muscat petit grains.

The wine stands out for its floral bouquet composed of delicate aromas that continue through its long finish.

Le Mas de Vessière - rosé

Mas de Vessière rosé is made from 80% Grenache noir and 20% Cinsault.

The wine is particularly fresh and fruity.
