The winemaker

A superb parcel of Syrah with exceptional exposure, given as a dowry to Édouard Amouroux in 1880, the "Clos des Oratoriens" owes its name to a small chapel dedicated to Saint-Marc erected in the 18th century on the edge of one of the estate's plots. The vineyard expanded over the years, becoming Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes in 1926, with a new label that has remained unchanged ever since. In 2000, the estate was bought by the wine merchant Ogier, whose mission was to raise the quality of this exceptional Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyard to the highest possible level. In 2006, Ogier added new plots of land on pebble and safre soils, and in 2011, under the guidance of oenologist Didier Couturier, the estate embarked on the path of biodynamic viticulture. Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes red is produced from a 25-hectare vineyard benefiting from the estate's three soil types: galets roulés, safre and limestone. The vines are cultivated using integrated farming methods, respecting nature and lunar cycles. The soil is ploughed with a horse, and the grapes are harvested by hand. The wine is aged in oak barrels for 12 months, and is a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre and 2% Cinsault.
