The Domaine des Escaravailles is a vineyard located in the commune of Rasteau, in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur region. The wines produced by the domain belong to several terroirs in addition to Rasteau. Indeed, the vineyard of the Domaine des Escaravailles also extends over the communes of Roaix, Villedieu, Saint Roman de Malegarde and Cairanne. The winemaker

The history of the Domaine des Escaravailles


The Domaine des Escaravailles was founded by Jean-Louis Ferran, with the help of his sons Daniel and Jean-Pierre, in 1953. Since 1999, it has been taken over by Gilles, Daniel's son. It is therefore the third generation of Ferran's who currently reign over the estate.

Gilles Ferran works with a famous oenologist from the south of the Rhône, Philippe Cambi, in order to always find the best balance for his blends.

The emblem of the Domaine des Escaravailles is the beetle, as the Occitan name of the animal is "escaravay". It is also the nickname given by the villagers to the Pénitents Noirs d'Avignon who owned the place in 1623. This brotherhood had been founded in 1586 by the military Pompey Catilina, special envoy from Rome and responsible for leading the papal troops in Avignon.

The Domaine des Escaravailles vineyard


The vineyard of the Domaine des Escaravailles covers 65 hectares. 40 hectares belong to the commune of Rasteau. Their soil is composed of stony, sloping clay-limestone slopes. The remaining 25 hectares are located on surrounding land in the communes of Cairanne, Roaix, Villedieu and Saint Roman de Malegarde.

The Domaine des Escaravailles produces mostly red wine, as well as some white and rosé wine, in addition to some natural sweet wines. The average age of the vines is 40 years. The average production is 250,000 bottles per year.

The red grape varieties are: Grenache Noir (60%), Syrah (20%), Carignan (10%), Cinsault (5%), Mourvèdre (5%).

The white grape varieties are: Marsanne (30%), Roussanne (30%), Grenache blanc (20%), Clairette (20%).

The Ferran family has chosen to preserve the ancestral know-how and to cultivate the vines the old-fashioned way, with plowing and organic fertilizers. Sorting, as well as harvesting, is essentially manual. The grapes are destemmed and carried to the semi-buried cellar, which is located in the heart of Rasteau's grounds, to be vinified and aged.
