Domaine des Favards

4.1
(6 customer reviews)
Céline Barbaud joined the family domaine in 2010. Three generations of winemakers came before her, passing on their passion for the trade and respect for the terroir. An engineer in plant chemistry, she brings a fresh perspective to this small operation. Domaine des Favards is located in the commune of Violès in the Vaucluse region, on stony, clay-limestone soils. Under the influence of the Mistral wind, the low-yielding vines produce quality grapes. Find out more

The winemaker

The history of the estate

The history of the Domaine des Favards began in 1920 when Casimir Barbaud bought the property in Violes, in the Rhône Valley. At that time, 18 hectares were planted with mulberry trees and only one parcel was planted with vines. Casimir built a winery so that he could vinify his own wine on the property.

Handed down from father to son, the estate expanded as family members bought out parcels. In 1976, Jean-Paul Barbaud took over the estate and decided to restructure it, stopping mixed farming and concentrating on growing grapes and modernizing the winery in order to market his wines.

In 1980, with the 1978 vintage, he renamed the estate "Domaine des Favards" in homage to his grandfather Casimir, nicknamed "Le Favard" (meaning the lucky man, the one who always has the bean in Provençal).

His daughter Céline has now joined him, bringing her expertise as a plant chemistry engineer. She brings a fresh perspective to this organic farm.

The terroir

The estate covers 25 hectares of vines in the Côtes du Rhône and Plan de Dieu (Côtes du Rhône Villages) appellations.

The Côtes du Rhône AOC benefits from a terroir with a temperate Mediterranean climate and composed of limestone terraces from the Tertiary and Quaternary eras that crisscross a hilly landscape.

AOC Plan de Dieu benefits from a terroir with a climate similar to that of the Côte du Rhône, but with a slight Mistral influence. The soils are clay-limestone and composed of rolled pebbles.

The vineyard has been converted to organic farming.

The wines

Cuvée Les Grandes Terres is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, a classic of the southern Rhône Valley. The color is garnet-red, with ruby highlights. The nose offers a bouquet of red fruits with hints of pepper. The palate is crisp, with red fruits, blackberry and licorice. Melted tannins, round and intense. A persistent finish.
