The winemaker

A Rhodanian nugget

Today, David and Florent Viale have been at the helm of this winery since their arrival in the 1990s. The estate was founded by Florent and David's grandfather, who initially supplied grapes to the major Rhône Valley wine merchants.

Then, under Florent's impetus, the domaine began making its own cuvées in 1991. The two brothers changed the way the domaine operated, no longer selling their grapes to negociants, but making their own wines under their own name. A new identity was created, and the domaine has gone from strength to strength, to become one of the great names in the region. The estate's wines have also won critical acclaim.

The 16-hectare vineyard is mainly planted with Syrah, which accounts for 13 hectares and is used to make the estate's red wines. As for the white wines, they are made from the Marsanne grape variety, which occupies 1.4 hectares of the Domaine du Colombier vineyard.

Domaine du Colombier wines

L'Hermitage blanc from Domaine Colombier is a long-keeping wine with a pale yellow color and green highlights. On the nose, intense aromas of white-fleshed fruit and dried fruit are revealed, along with the sweet notes of marzipan, giving way to a structured, elegant and persistent palate. This round, fruity wine is the perfect partner for poultry with cream sauce, asparagus risotto or goat's cheese. This wine has been rated 92/100 by Robert Parker.

L'Hermitage rouge is a wine that seduces with its dark color, its nose with notes of black fruits, spices, complemented by smoky and peppery notes. On the palate, this wine is structured and fleshy, with complex tannins. The liquorice finish is long. This wine is made from old Syrah vines and aged for 18 months in oak barrels, giving it excellent cellaring potential. Charcuterie, pheasant with porcini mushrooms or chocolate fondant will be sublimated by this wine's finesse and elegance. This wine is critically acclaimed, and its 2017 vintage received admirable scores from critics Parker Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck and Vinous.

La cuvée Gaby is a 100% Syrah produced in AOC Crozes Hermitage, on the nose pretty vanilla notes mingle with black fruit and spice notes. On the palate, the tannins are present, the attack is straightforward, with good density and a persistent finish. A perfect match for roast quail with chestnuts.
