The winemaker
In 1961, after his military service in Algeria, Raymond ran a small fruit farming property in the municipality of Mercurol. At that time, already fishing production was in serious difficulties and, one day, he decided to eliminate almost all of its peach and replace them with the vine. He then production are planted an area of about 3 hectares. In 1970, he bought the property with his wife Monique. He tried the experience of the cooperative, but soon he realizes that his interest is to remain independent. It invests plant is perfected, makes wine and sells its production to trading, getting through this, serious references on the quality of its wine. In 1989, me (Etienne Berthoin), his son, we create a GAEC (Groupement Agricole d'Exploitation en Commun). Me, new winemaker, quickly puts me at work and assimilated, thanks to the experience and advice of my father, all the data needed to work in the vineyards and initiated me into the mysteries of winemaking. Many professional meetings (oenologists, friends) allow me to improve my knowledge. In 1992, we decided to make our first bottling and so create the Domaine les Chenêts In 1998, with my wife Catherine, we took over the area after the retirement of my stepfather. Today my area covers 12.50ha vineyard, composed of Syrah for red wines and Marsanne for the white wines. The vines are trellised and the harvest is manual. In 2000, we invest in a 4ha of land on Isere bridge, different terroir Mercurol. In 2010, we move from rational culture to culture bio. Three years of his conversion necessary to qualify for organic farming. Since 1961, the operation has continued to expand, modernize and move towards consumer demand; hopefully it will be the same even during long decades can be with a son, who knows?
