The History of Clos Saint Michel

Clos Saint Michel has been run by Olivier and Franck Mousset since 1996. They belong to the fourth generation of winemakers who work this land to produce powerful wines, which are very famous in the region. When they took over the estate, the two brothers undertook to rehabilitate the cellars to better mature their wine. In 2017, they completely rebuilt their winery, even going through the advice of a decorator, in order to link aesthetics with the necessity of the place.

The winemakers have taken it upon themselves to reserve their know-how in order to maintain a truly artisanal enterprise whose yield is voluntarily limited to preserve the best possible quality. The culture, as well as the wine making, are led in a reasoned way.

The Clos Saint Michel terroir

The terroir of Clos Saint Michel is rooted in the ancient bed of the Rhone, which left a soil of round, blond pebbles that give back at night the heat of the sun that they stored during the day. Its Provencal bastide was built more than a century ago and has retained its original appearance.

The Clos Saint Michel vineyard covers 40 hectares. The estate has converted to organic farming. In addition to the limited production to promote quality, the two Mousset brothers have created an exceptional wine: a white Châteauneuf du Pape. This rarity in the appellation constitutes a dry and fruity nectar, with a taste reminiscent of hazelnut.

The Clos Saint Michel wines

Clos Saint Michel wines have a reputation for being warm and full-bodied. They always find the balance between tannins and acidity.

Châteauneuf du Pape white

The white Châteauneuf du Pape from Clos Saint Michel is a blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Clairette, 20% Roussanne and 20% Bourboulenc. The wine has a light yellow color. The nose is imbued with floral notes, as well as hints of vanilla.

The mouth is complex. It proposes a very pleasant fatness and remains always ample, in spite of the time which passes if you reserve the wine for the guard. As the years go by, the palate also conceals vanilla notes. The hazelnut remains present in the background.

Châteauneuf du Pape red

The Clos Saint Michel red version of Châteauneuf du Pape is composed of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. It displays a beautiful garnet red color. The nose is fine, always very balanced. Red fruits dominate and are accompanied by spicy notes. We also detect flavors of licorice.

The mouth is ample and fleshy. It is a powerful wine whose tannins reinforce the structure. The red fruits are still present, as is the licorice. The Clos Saint Michel red Châteauneuf du Pape is a wine for ageing which improves with age.
