The Popes have resided in Avignon from 1300 to 1400. In 1317, Pope John XXII buys the Count of Provence (then a vassal of the King of France) Valréas and its surroundings ... The Enclave Valréas was born ... it is the largest of the Enclaves of Upper Comtat. And the one that passed through history and still exists today administratively, Vaucluse completely landlocked territory in the Drome. In the papal territories, many ecclesiastical disposal of "charges" and enjoyed income properties.
