Surrounded by the Alps, northeastern Italy is home to one of the best-known wine-growing regions: the Piedmont. Great names such as Barolo and Barbaresco, made from the nebbiolo grape, come from this region of limestone and clay weathering soils. The origins of the Piedmont grape can be traced back to the 13th century. Even today, most of Italy's nebbiolo grapes are grown here. The vines are very demanding in terms of climate and subsoil, and ripen very late.
