Tuscany isn't just famous for its scenery: world-renowned wines come from this region. Plenty of sunshine and sufficient rainfall on arid limestone soils provide optimal conditions for high quality. Sangiovese is one of Italy's oldest and most important grape varieties. It is grown throughout the country, but preferably in Tuscany. One of the slow-maturing varieties, the grapes are not harvested until October, even in warm weather. The resulting wines are generally high in acidity and tannin, and light red in color. Sangiovese wines form the basis of some exceptional Italian red wines.
