In a few words ...

Mondeuse is a red grape variety, which also exists in white and has given its name to the wine it produces. This typically Savoyard grape variety has been grown here since ancient times. This spicy, fruity, tannic red wine ages remarkably well over the years. Mondeuse is best served with red meats or, as the old winegrowers did, with Tome des Bauges as a snack.

Le Guide Hachette des Vins

Le Guide Hachette des Vins Critique professionnel

"Instead of the traditional approach (de-stemmed grapes, long vatting), Yves Girard-Madoux prefers a mixed approach, with one-third intact whole grapes, one-third crushed whole grapes and one-third de-stemmed grapes in the vat, all macerated for just ten days. In this way, he extracts spicy fruit (white pepper, blackberry) and silky tannins - "languorous" even says one taster - that support a long, melted finish."

No wonder this Mondeuse was awarded the Gold Medal at the Concours des Vins de Savoie in 2020! A mouthful of fruit, kirsch cherry, blackcurrant... and spicy pepper notes, typical of the grape variety. The tannins are supple, making this a wine that improves with age and ages very well. I enjoyed it with a fine red meat, cheese and a chocolate dessert!
