In a few words ...
Domaine de Montcalmès is located 30 km northwest of Montpellier. It takes its name from the hamlet of montcalmès on the plateau of the same name overlooking the hérault valley. Part of the Pourtalié family comes from this hamlet. It is now abandoned. Originally, the family farm covered 30 ha of vines, all of which were vinified in a cooperative cellar. In 1998, frédéric pourtalié and his father jean-marie decided to create a private winery. The first red wine was made in 1999, producing just 5000 bottles. Today, the estate produces around 50,000 bottles a year. The estate covers 22 hectares in the communes of puéchabon, aniane, st jean de fos and st saturnin de lucian (all part of the terrasses du larzac appellation). In a vast cellar that can accommodate two vintages, we produce a single grand cuvée red blend: syrah (60%), grenache and mourvèdre (20% each), destemmed and strained, aged for 24 months in barrels, without fining or filtration, in the most classic tradition. The Marsanne and Roussanne parity white, vinified in barrels, has been available since 2004.
