The winemaker

With a degree from Harvard and a doctorate in medicine from Stanford, Laura Catena bears a well-known name in Argentina, that of the country's most famous winemaking dynasty. Still involved in the family vineyard (Catena Zapata), she has also created this small estate, which she co-manages with Roy Urvieta, a gifted young oenologist. They share a passion for Pinot Noir and Burgundy, and the conviction that certain high-altitude sites in the Uco Valley are ideal for producing great Pinot Noir. Back in 2008, Laura Catena experimented with several Burgundy clones on small plots at altitude. Eight years later, she has isolated five of them (between 1.1 and 2 ha), the best ones, from which the five cuvées in the current range are made. All are located in the Tupungato valley, already renowned for its Chardonnay, at altitudes ranging from 1,120 m to 1,500 m. The result is remarkable and surprising: the homeland of Malbec also knows how to produce Pinot Noirs of exceptional elegance, fleshier than those from Burgundy but just as exciting and intriguing.
