The winemaker

The idea was the brainchild of David Gregg, the great craftsman behind the Vasse Felix estate: to produce a top-of-the-range sparkling wine at Margaret River. It began with a first wine from the 1984 vintage, followed in early 2000 by two other cuvées, an extra-brut and a sparkling shiraz. 2010 marks a turning point: the discovery of a highly promising "block" of chardonnay, planted with a particular clone ("Gingin") in the south of the estate, in Karridale, an area exposed to the cold, biting winds of the Southern Ocean. The result is a more than convincing blanc de blancs, prompting Vasse Felix to dedicate a dedicated winery to it in 2020. Vinified from 2018 grapes, partially aged in wood and aged for more than 24 months, the first vintage is released in 2020, and the team is thrilled: fresh, complex, with a refinement and lightness that are very Champagne-like.
