The winemaker

"Los locos" (the crazies) is the nickname given to a group of friends from different backgrounds, but united by youth, passion and a certain idea of wine. Their meeting during a trip to Chile in 2017 gave birth to Masintïn, a small artisanal "house" that gives a different image to Chilean wines. Its raison d'être: to revive a forgotten heritage in the exciting and singular fringe regions of Itata and Maule, in the form of old, non-irrigated gobelet vines of Cinsault and Carignan, worked the old-fashioned way (by hand and horse). Diego Urra is the cornerstone of the project: with a degree in viticulture and oenology, he is the team's "Prince Pruning" and "King Compost". Passionate about pruning and soil microbiology, he scours the vineyards, spotting the finest plots and forging strong relationships with the winemakers. These old vines are over 70 years old, and the grapes have a concentration that speaks for itself. The winemaking and ageing processes are geared to their needs: indigenous yeasts, gentle maceration and ageing in concrete vats, old barrels and amphorae. The result is wines that are sincere, different and very pure in their expression of fruit. A revelation for Tim Atkin (MW), who named them "Best of Chile" 2022.
