In a few words ...

While there are many clos in Burgundy, Clos des Maréchaudes is unique in that it is the only one with two levels of appellations, and this on just 2 hectares (Corton Grand Cru and Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru, on 1⁄4 and 3⁄4 of the surface respectively). A monopoly of the Domaine du Pavillon, the Clos was planted in its entirety in the early 1950s. The upper part, on a slope approaching 30 degrees, faces east-southeast, on brown limestone soil over scree. This portion is ideally suited to the production of our Clos des Maréchaudes Grand Cru. The proximity of the parent rock, the shallow soil, the high clay content and the presence of numerous limestone elements are all elements that enable this climate to harmoniously marry finesse and power. The climate is reputed to be one of the sunniest on the Corton hillside, which is reflected in the generally earliest flowering. "En Mareschaut" is derived from the Old French "Maresche" (marsh), the gender of which is feminine. The lower part of Aloxe-Corton and Ladoix-Serrigny was marshy due to its proximity to the Lauve spring. Major drainage works were carried out to reclaim the land and plant it with vines.
