In Alsace, sylvaner, the second most popular grape variety by volume, produces a light, fruity wine that only achieves real quality on good terroirs.
The 1995 vintage enjoyed a very fine summer. In September, however, producers thought they were in for a repeat of the 1994 vintage. Rain arrived on the 7th, but it was sparse and concentrated, so there was no dilution effect, especially as the vines were suffering from drought. Fine weather returned on September 17.
