The winemaker
The history of the estate
Domaine Barthel is a family business more commonly known as Domaine Christian Barthel. The domaine is a family estate that has been established for three generations on the town of Albé, in the center of the Alsatian vineyards, 60 km from Strasbourg and 15 km from Sélestat.
The terroir
Today, the estate extends over ten hectares of vines, balanced between young and old vines. Typical of the Alsace region, the Christian Barthel estate enjoys an exceptional climate and is located in a mountainous area, being one of the highest vineyards in Alsace (up to 500 m altitude).
The vineyard's soils are mainly composed of Schistes Gris, which helps to produce typical, dry and sweet wines.
With the aim of producing authentic wines that breathe the terroir in which they have evolved, Domaine Christian Barthel works its vines using integrated farming methods, and harvests the grapes by hand.
The wines
Cuvée Pinot Noir L'instinct is deeply perfumed, offering notably intense notes of red fruits and nuances of wild aromas. On the palate, the wine is velvety, supple and nervous. Ideal with charcuterie or game, it could also be enjoyed on a platter of mature cheeses.
Cuvée Pinot Noir Vieilles Vignes offers a lovely, fragrant nose, very fruity, but also with hints of wood and undergrowth. The palate is quite invigorating, revealing notes of violets, before giving way to a licorice finish. As a good Alsace Pinot Noir, it goes very well with roasts, game, red meats and charcuterie.
Cuvée Pinot blanc is a fresh, discreet dry wine. Golden yellow in color, its nose is fruity and its palate simple and lively. A straightforward dry white that's all pleasure. Ideal with salads or fine charcuterie, it can also be paired with white meat or a platter of Alsatian cheeses.
