DOMAINE MARCEL DEISS

4.5
(5 customer reviews)
The Marcel Deiss estate is one of the jewels of the Alsace terroir. Founded in 1947, it cultivates only typically Alsatian grape varieties, sometimes even extinct strains. Favoring terroir-based viticulture rather than grape-based viticulture, the estate showcases the great diversity of its soils through a variety of cuvées. Find out more

The winemaker

The history of the estate

The Marcel Deiss estate is located in Bergheim, next to Ribeauvillé, right in the heart of the terroir that is home to the Grands Crus. Established in 1947, the estate has been passed down through the family ever since, preserving the heritage and know-how behind exceptional wines.

For more than 40 years, the Marcel Deiss estate has opted for a culture of Place and terroir, rather than a culture of grape variety, still very much in vogue in Alsace. As a result, the wines, like the grands crus, are made with a range of grape varieties that are sometimes unknown today, but which form a coherent framework in the process of enhancing the value of the terroir.

Terroir

The Marcel Deiss estate enjoys an exceptional position, on a mosaic of terroirs, and within a diversity of climates. The soils are extremely diverse, but can be grouped into different categories:
- Crystalline soils, marked by the presence of granite, gravel, sandstone and sand, among others.
- Sedimentary soils, composed of limestone, clay and marl.
- Volcanic soils, which may or may not be eruptive.

The estate covers 32 hectares of vines, including 24 hectares of white grapes and 8 hectares of black grapes. It features classic Alsatian grape varieties such as Pinot noir, Pinot gris, Riesling, Pinot blanc, Gewurztraminer and Muscat à petits grains blancs. But the Marcel Deiss estate is deeply attached to Alsace's winegrowing heritage, cultivating many little-known and sometimes extinct endemic grape varieties such as Pinot Beurrot, Chasselas rose and even vines of unknown stock.

Wines

Cuvée Engelgarten is a dry wine, as bold as it is taut, marked by an intense stony minerality. This wine is shaped to be a fine table wine, to be paired with any occasion. If it can be enjoyed now, it can also be kept for a good dozen years.

Cuvée Riesling vendanges tardives has a bewitching nose with notes of honey and quince. On the palate, the material is fat and dense, without ever being sickening. Good length on the nectar.
