The winemaker

The Ostertag-Hurlimann estate starts with an overgrown plot

The Ostertag family has been winemakers since 1890. Georges Ostertag was the first to buy an uncultivated plot in Epfig. His son took over, and so it went from generation to generation. In 1955, Jeanine Ostertag and her husband René Hurlimann inherited the property. By then, the estate had grown to 4 hectares and was now called Domaine Ostertag-Hurlimann. In 2000, Yannick, Jeanine and René's son, joined them after obtaining a vocational baccalaureate. He worked on cultivating the vines and modernizing the estate.

At the heart of Alsace's terroir, the Ostertag-Hurlimann estate flourishes

The 18-hectare vineyard is spread over 5 communes in Alsace: Epfig, Blienschwiller, Reichsfeld, Bernardvillé and Dambach la ville. The land is divided into small plots of vines, spread over the slopes of the region. The south-facing schist soils encourage the vines to seek their character in the depths of the earth. As for the parcels belonging to the Winzenberg Grand Cru, their sunny exposure is ideal. At an altitude of 320 meters, the soil is granitic and rich in quartz, the source of the finesse and elegance of the wines from this zone. The family of independent winegrowers cultivates its vines at high density to guarantee low yields and good concentration in the grapes. Certified High Environmental Value since 2018, the estate preserves biodiversity on its land and adopts responsible management of water resources.

The Ostertag-Hurlimann estate offers a wide range of precisely crafted cuvées

Domaine Ostertag-Hurlimann produces 16 critically acclaimed wines. Riesling makes up 44% of their grape varieties, complemented by gewurztraminer, sylvaner, pinot blanc, noir and gris and muscat. The estate's Alsace wines are elegant and need ageing to develop their full potential. In their range, the winemakers distinguish between fruit wines designed to showcase a grape variety and earthy wines that pay tribute to a terroir. The estate also produces white and rosé Crémants d'Alsace and wood-distilled eaux-de-vie.
